OPAL Play (Outdoor Play and Learning)

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."- George Bernard Shaw

At Northdown Primary School, we believe that every child has a fundamental right to play. Just as vital as their formal education, play is a biological and social necessity that is critical for a child’s health, wellbeing, and overall development.

Through our commitment to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Primary Programme, we transform our school grounds into a stimulating "journey of challenge and self-discovery". Our goal is to nurture the full potential of every child, ensuring they develop the high aspirations and self-belief needed to make a positive difference in their community.

Our Values in Action

Our ethos of ‘I can…’ is intrinsic to everything we do, and our approach to play is the perfect arena for children to live out our core values:

  • Curiosity: We provide diverse environments that encourage children to explore imaginatively, ask questions about the world, and take ownership of their own learning.
  • Courage: We believe in developing courageous children who have the confidence to "find a way". By confronting fears in a supportive environment, they learn to achieve beyond their own aspirations.
  • Determination: Play at Northdown builds resilience. We encourage children to be motivated by challenges, learn from the past, and celebrate both their own successes and those of their friends.
  • Harmony: Our play spaces foster respect for oneself, others, and the environment. We nurture a community where children help one another and use kind words to resolve conflicts and negotiate their play.
  • Aspiration: By being curious, courageous, and determined during playtime, our pupils develop the ambitious mindset required to become lifelong learners.

What is OPAL Play?

OPAL play is defined as a process that is intrinsically motivated, child-led, and freely chosen. It is not just about equipment; it is about providing the space and culture for children to follow their own instincts, ideas, and interests.

The Benefits for Our Children

A high-quality play offer provides far-reaching benefits that extend into the classroom and beyond:

  • Health and Wellbeing: Quality play creates happier, healthier children with a positive attitude toward life.
  • Learning Readiness: When children play in a "flow" state, they are better able to transition into afternoon learning, allowing them to maximise every moment of the school day.
  • Social Development: Through play, children practice vital communication, teamwork, and negotiation skills.
  • Emotional Resilience: Play allows children to experience and learn to cope with a full range of emotions—from frustration and rejection to fascination and achievement.

A Balanced Approach to Risk

At Northdown, we believe that "no child will learn about risk if they are wrapped in cotton wool". Following guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), we adopt a risk-benefit approach.

We aim to offer children the chance to encounter "acceptable risks" as part of a managed and stimulating environment. This builds "play literacy" and teaches children how to identify and manage risks independently—a vital skill for their future lives.

Our Play Team

Our staff are trained to act as Playworkers. Their role is not to direct the play, but to facilitate it by providing materials, tools, and a culture that supports self-directed exploration. Before intervening in challenging play, our team follows four helpful steps: Watch, Wait, Move Closer, and Intervene without shutting down the play. This ensures children have the time they need to practice independent conflict management and risk assessment.

Equality and Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring our play provision is welcoming and accessible to every child, regardless of their background or individual abilities. We listen to our children's voices (Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) to ensure the experiences we deliver are tailored to the unique needs of our community.
