Mathematics Mastery – EYFS & KS1
Key Stage 2 – Excellence Planning
In Key Stage Two, Northdown follow our excellence planning, which aims cover all of the national curriculum objectives in a way that is progressive and encourages a depth of learning and understanding.
Each lesson, children will work from three sections:
- Practice and Apply Skills
- Challenge
- Reasoning
In order to thrive, children first need to be taught the skill or calculation for each unit of work, such as using the formal written method for addition. Children then have the opportunity to practice this skill to ensure they are ready to move on to the next level of work.
Once children have a good understanding of the calculation being taught, they progress on to the application phase, in which they will be applying their learning in to a new context, such as word problems or practical investigations.
Children will always been challenged, looking at skills in different contexts in order to ensure children have mastered each skill.
Children will then have a strong understanding of the concepts being taught, at this time they are ready to take on some reasoning questions in which they must explain their thought process, justify their answers or give detailed explanations about their answers.
Times Table Rockstars
We are pleased to provide children with access to Times Table Rockstars at Northdown. This is a great resource in which children can practice their times tables to improve their knowledge, speed and recall of multiplication and division facts.
Children can strive to beat their own speed and points, as well as compete against other children, classes and schools.
Children have their own log in which they can use to access Times Table Rockstars online or on the app.
